Water flossers, also known as water picks or oral irrigators, are an oral health appliance that helps you remove food particles and plaque on your teeth. It can help prevent gum disease by reducing plaque and gingivitis.
If you are wearing braces or other orthodontics, using a water flosser to clean your teeth is much easier than using dental floss. Those who have impaired dexterity due to arthritis or other such medical conditions can experience a better quality of life using a water flosser.
Though water flossing can be a great addition to your oral care routine, it should not replace regular flossing. In fact, if you can do both in addition to brushing, then that is when your oral care routine is most effective!
There are 3 main types of water flossers on the market currently. They are:
- Countertop
- Cordless (portable)
- Combination (a mix of a water flosser with an electric toothbrush)
